JBS Foods, a meat giant based in Brazil, has taken a significant step towards environmental responsibility by repurposing animal waste from its operations to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This forward-thinking initiative aims to not only reduce carbon emissions but also provide a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
### A Sustainable Solution
The concept of “cow power” may sound unusual at first, but the process of converting animal waste into fuel holds immense potential for combating climate change. JBS has redirected approximately 1.2 million tons of beef tallow and pork lard towards the production of SAF over the past two years. By harnessing the power of organic waste, JBS is contributing to a more sustainable future for the aviation industry.
### Paving the Way for Change
The aviation sector has long been grappling with the challenge of decarbonisation, given its heavy reliance on fossil fuels. By utilising animal waste for fuel production, JBS is not only addressing environmental concerns but also supporting the aviation industry in its efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources. Jason Weller, JBS’s global chief sustainability officer, emphasises the importance of such initiatives in driving decarbonisation efforts and promoting responsible waste management.
### Climate-Friendly Innovation
Sustainable Aviation Fuel offers a promising solution to mitigate carbon emissions in the aviation sector. Studies have shown that SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 70% compared to traditional fossil fuels. Furthermore, SAF can be blended with kerosene in commercial aircraft, providing a practical and eco-friendly alternative for the industry.
According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the commercial aviation sector accounts for approximately 5% of the global climate burden. Given the pressing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, SAF presents a viable solution to address the environmental impact of air travel.
### Embracing Renewable Energy
Beyond producing SAF, JBS is also exploring other avenues to harness renewable energy sources. In Brazil, the company’s subsidiary, Friboi, is conducting studies to evaluate the feasibility of using animal waste for aviation fuel production. Additionally, Biopower, another entity under JBS, is investigating the potential for producing renewable fuel for ships as an alternative to bunker oil, a common fossil fuel used in maritime transportation.
Biopower operates several biodiesel plants in Brazil, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel derived from fossil fuels. These plants utilise organic waste from cattle processing to produce biodiesel, emitting significantly less carbon dioxide compared to fossil diesel. By expanding its renewable energy portfolio, JBS is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
### Driving Innovation in Transportation
In 2023, JBS embarked on a project to fuel its truck fleet with 100% biodiesel (B100). This initiative marked a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to embrace renewable energy solutions for transportation. A truck from the Dutch manufacturer Daf has been successfully using B100, demonstrating the efficiency and viability of this biofuel as a sustainable substitute for traditional diesel.
The results of the B100 tests have been promising, showing that vehicles powered by 100% biodiesel emit up to 80% less carbon dioxide compared to those using conventional diesel. This shift towards biodiesel aligns with Brazil’s increasing adoption of biofuels in its transportation matrix, with a mandate to blend 14% biodiesel with diesel sold to consumers.
